Also now a days search engines are smarter to calculate which page (category page or the tag or the specific post) to rank higher or to give weight-age for a particular keyword depending on various parameters. Also if you minutely observe, you can see http://technorati.com/tag/android and http://technorati.com/technology/android/ you can see how unique they are. Firstly two slugs are different for categories and tags though the name is same for both - "android". Then, They have customized tag pages even with the 'related user comments' making the tag pages unique and lovable by Search engines. In category pages, there are no related comments. Also content is differently represented in tags & category pages. Also see how they are different in the titles for categories ( they use " Android - Technorati ") and tags (They use "android Articles, Posts, Blogs, Videos - Technorati").
